Land Transport Authority (LTA) has secured contracts for 660 new electric buses, set to hit Singapore’s roads from late 2026. This bold step replaces aging diesel models and pushes the nation closer to a zero-emission public fleet. Among the haul: 360 single-deckers and 300 double-deckers, marking the largest buy yet of electric double-deckers.

Fleet Expansion Details

These buses will phase out diesel vehicles nearing retirement, boosting the electric count to over 1,100 in a fleet of about 5,800. Single-deck models feature three doors for swift boarding; double-deckers sport three doors and dual staircases for high-volume routes. Deployment ramps up progressively through 2027, aligning with infrastructure like new chargers at depots such as Mandai and upcoming hubs in Kallang, Beauty World, and Tampines North.

Cutting-Edge Safety and Passenger Features

Safety takes center stage with automatic fire suppression targeting key zones, collision warnings, driver fatigue monitors, and camera mirrors replacing blind spots. Passengers gain from vibrant electronic displays delivering real-time updates, ads, and alerts for rail disruptions or shuttle services. Such innovations promise smoother, safer rides while slashing noise and fumes.

Suppliers and Long-Term Vision

Contracts went to proven players: ST Engineering Mobility Services, BYD, Yutong, and Cycle & Carriage Automotive—building on prior deals like the 2023 purchase of 360 single-deckers. LTA eyes half the fleet electric by 2030 and full cleaner-energy shift by 2040, with over 2,000 more e-buses planned in five years. This electrified push cuts emissions dramatically, supporting Singapore’s net-zero ambitions.
